As for mods as in content changes, the Horn of the Abyss mod is hands-down the best thing out there. The developers aim to make it feel like something New World Computing would've developed, and it shows. They've rebalanced the existing towns, added a tenth town (the Cove), new creatures, new map objects, and even new campaigns.

On the Random Map settings after both players have joined the game, you would want to set the following settings. COMPUTER ONLY TEAMS set to 1 (if you set the comp players to say 6 and wanted 3 teams of 2 then you would set this to 3. Or if you wanted say 2 teams of 3 each you would set it to 2. For example, I'll have scenarios where the computers get tons of towns/resources, while I have a few towns but a treasure zone. That way, the battles feel endgame.
